September 15, 2007 at 7:29 AMHi Kyle, Firstly let me tell you how similar Korean and Japanese languages are to each other. Please take a look at the following example sentences. They all have the same meaning. 1) 우리 회사의 사장님은 사원의 복리후생을 위해서 냉장고와 세탁기와 자동차를 구입했습니다。 2) うちの会社の社長は、社員の福利厚生のために冷蔵庫と洗濯機と自動車を購入しました。 3) The president of our company purchased a fridge, a washing machine and a car for the welfare of employees. Korean and Japanese ones seemingly look completely different, but if you write loanwords using Chinese characters as had been done until a few decades ago in Korea, you can get the following sentence, which is very similar to Japanese one. 1) 우리 会社의 社長님은 社員의 福利厚生을 위해서 冷蔵庫와 洗濯機와 自動車를 購入했습니다。 2) うちの会社の社長は、社員の福利厚生のために冷蔵庫と洗濯機と自動車を購入しました。 Of course, this is an extreme example, but serious readings, such as news articles or academic writings, are more likely to have this tendency. Interestingly enough, those Korean words are different from Chinese equivalents and the same as Japanese ones. Both Korean and Japanese languages borrowed a great number of words especially from ancient Chinese. On the other hand, Chinese and Korean imported a lot of loanwords from modern Japanese, late 19th to early 20th century, mainly in academic, scientific, and technical fields. One of the most typical examples is, perhaps a little ironically, 共产主义 (communism). Secondly, about ancient writing styles, before Korean and Japanese people invented their own characters, Korean alphabets in the 15th century and Hiragana/Katakana in the 8th century respectively, both countries basically used ancient orthodox Chinese or Koreanized/Japanized Chinese for writing. Please imagine a situation in which you speak English every day and have no choice but to write your documents and letters in Latin or hieroglyphics. Surprisingly, Korean and Japanese intelligentsia still preferred using Chinese for writing even after the invention of their original characters. The reasons are very simple. The ability to read and write Chinese had long been considered to be a status symbol for educated people until the late 19th century. In other words, Chinese classical literature was deeply adored by Korean and Japanese intelligentsia in those days. Kyle, please join the Chinese Character Cultural Sphere!! Thank you for reading.

September 14, 2007 at 12:15 PMHi kyle, Wow, Russian and Korean! Both languages are so attractive. Since you live in Harbin, I guess you are learning Chinese and Russian simultaneously! If you would like to be totally immersed in the wonderful East-Asian-language world, I would strongly recommend you to choose Korean. Korean and Japanese are very similar in vocab/grammar. After learning Chinese characters, you’ll find learning Korean and Japanese very intriguing. Those three languages have been developing a close relationship over a long period of history.

September 14, 2007 at 2:54 AMHi Hannahlm! 중국사람은 수박을 아주 좋아합니다. 그리고 중국에서는 수박이 매우 쌉니다. 제일 쌀 때는 하나가 수원 밖에 안합니다. 한국의 수박은 비쌉니까? 일본사람도 수박을 좋아합니다만, 저는 어릴 적부터 별로 좋아하지는 않습니다. 수분이 많기 때문에 먹으면 먹을수록 슬퍼져 버립니다.
