Is "turned down" a serious phrase? I (groundlessly) thought it would be less "heavy" than "rejected/refused" .... “被拒绝” seems to be most commonly used Chinese counterpart of "rejected/refused/turned down".

You have a point there. Now, how about "She dropped me" or "She dumped me" for "ふる" in Japanese. And, how about saying “你那么想我，我很感谢你” instead of “你那么想我，我非常高兴”. I guess “感谢你” is more "business-like", hehe.

“适合”, a verb, can be followed by an object, while “合适”, an adjective, can't.

How about "turn down" for "ふる" in Japanese? Probably “甩” (shuai3) is a good counterpart of Japanese "ふる".
