Not sure on the zong/song. My initial reaction is 总，but I must admit I'm not sure how that fits in the sentence grammatically!

April 14, 2012 at 2:16 PMHi hiewhongliang, wow you have just given me a big "doh!" moment. I had always always thought it was the 陪 - purely because of the meaning of "to accompany". I have just asked my better half (Chinese) which character it is, and you are absolutely right, it should be 配. Can't believe I've had that one wrong for so long. I guess I also need to go back and revisit my tones given the big difference between 2nd and 4th.....
And I also totally agree with your 加 for coffee. I was being a bit slow in my response to Veronique, but everyday in Starbucks I always ask for my 美式 to be 加一点牛奶

April 14, 2012 at 12:53 PMHi veronique, when talking about food and drink, I often use "陪/péi" which means to accompany. For example, if I am ordering a tuna sandwich with fries, I will ask for 金枪鱼三明治陪薯条。This use of péi seems to be well understood by various cafes in Shanghai and I've heard waitstaff say it back to me as well, so I assume it is grammatically correct. Whether or not this péi can be used for coffee with sugar, I don't know. Hopefully one of our teachers can enlighten us.

就事后 ("after the event") - I think John was making the point that with that usage of the term 有成就感 (Jenny's example was Jeremy Lin's parents' likely feelings towards their son having gone to Harvard and now being an NBA star) it's more a feeling of achievement with hindsight/in retrospect, rather than the sense of achievement through currently doing something.

April 16, 2012 at 12:35 PMHi pretz, I have a data plan with China Mobile and it costs me RMB50 per month for 500mb which feels like a bargain to me (although, to be fair, I haven't benchmarked that against anything else either in China or overseas). I'm also easily baffled by all the jargon - I recall another thread on this a month or so ago where I was just starting to get my head around it - I know that China Mobile doesn't have 3G, but I can certainly access the internet on my HTC smartphone through China Mobile which I think is because China Mobile does actually have 3G technology, they just call it something else. I may be wrong, but I think this is one of the problems with iPhones, i.e. iPhones can only use 3G network and can't pick-up China Mobile's network (as I said, I may have this wrong). However, other smartphones (mine at least) seems to be able to select whichever signal is available.
re your inbox comment - you and I have different email mgt philosophies I think. I go to bed anxious if there are any items at all in my inbox - I don't think i'd ever sleep if there were 20,000 ;-)
