My favorite three signs that I can remember off the top of my head were from a hotel in Dalian.

  • Warm Stomach Soup - The direct translation of some tofu soup that was quite good (and stomach warming, not stomach containing).
  • Stuffed Bowels - The sign on the sausage at breakfast.  While technically accurate, not exactly appealing...
  • No Smonking! - A simple spelling error, but it makes me happy. Smonking!  :D

It might be different on your iPod because mine is a low-tech nano and has the round flywheel button thingy. On my iPod I have to press and hold both the center button in the middle of the flywheel and the down direction on the flywheel at the same time. If you've got a fancy iPod touch, I think that this might be your solution.

I'm *guessing* you need the option at the bottom of the page - press and hold the sleep/wake button and the hold button at the same time. Make sure you hold them both down until the apple logo appears. Hopefully you know what these buttons are (the ones pictured on the website?)...I don't have a clue as I don't have an iPod touch.

Sometimes when my I first plug my nano into my computer and it tries to sync to iTunes my poor iPod breaks and I get the "apple screen of death". Is this what is happening for you? If I press and hold the center button and the down direction on the flywheel at the same time, it resets and all is happy and functional again.

Ah - a topic near and dear to my heart. My research has been a bit related to Chinese geography. I have had a miserable time finding the data on the land area of the "prefectures", which weren't mentioned in the podcast. Since they have caused me much pain, I will explain them (feel free to correct me if I get anything wrong).

Prefectures are the second level division of the government, below the province and above the counties. There are two main types. One type are those which are referred to by their key administrative city. For example, 杭州 Hángzhōu - capital of 浙江 Zhèjiāng, which was mentioned in the podcast, can refer to both the city and the prefecture (a much larger land area which contains the districts/counties under the administration of the city).  The other type of prefecture is the Autonomous prefecture. These are similar to the autonomous regions in that they are largely minority Chinese, and they are located in the autonomous regions and the provinces - Yunnan, Sichuan, Qinghai and Heilongjiang are some provinces that contain  autonomous prefectures.

Yay for Journey to the West and the Monkey King!  Too bad I'm not ready to move up to Advanced. :(  Although, really there can't be too much difference between being mostly lost in the UI's and completely lost in the Advanced lessons.  :D
