April 15, 2008 at 2:14 AMcalkins, you can also say 汉堡包 (hànbǎobāo) for a burger. Thats how I recalled learning it in S'pore, but like many chinese words, they can tend to get shortened, yet both are commonly used.

April 15, 2008 at 2:08 AMIn regards to 嘛 (ma) as a pause or delay, it should be noted that 那个 (nàge) would be closer to the equivalent of "umm..." when you are searching for a word while talking. You will hear “那个,那个, 那个。。。” all the time when you come to china。

Eventually, you learn to deal with it without even the slightest irritation.
