April 8, 2008 at 8:27 AMlight487, Listen to the show again. 吧（吧）can be used for uncertainly (a minuscule amount) but not real questioning. in the "He's not in", the 吧 （ba) at the end makes it it more like a deflated OK. let me translate a couple of connies sentences to help clarify the meaning of the 吧 (ba) when used as a question/conformation 你是Clay吧？ Nǐ shì Clay ba? You are Clay aren't you? 是我的吧？ Shì wǒ de ba? This is mine right? 不好吃吧？ Bù hǎochī ba? Its bad isnt it? You expect an YES on all of these, unlike a true question.

Think of the pattern like this: Not....Not possible/an option. so for the sentence you had in question 我非去香港不可。 Wǒ fēi qù Xiānggǎng bùkě. (Think of it as "I not go HK not possible". ) I have to go to HK ill do a couple more from connies examples above. 非我们不可。 Fēi wǒmen bùkě. (not us not possible) We are necessary (to do QW) 非录不可。 Fēi lù bùkě. (not record not possible) We better record! 我非去医院不可。 Wǒ fēi qù yīyuàn bùkě. (I not go hospital not good) I need to go to the hospital 这个门我非跳过去不可。 Zhège mén wǒ fēi tiào guòqu bùkě. (this gate I not jump over not an option) I have to jump over this gate ect...
