April 29, 2008 at 2:19 AMIvy0, the words and patterns of languages do not always correlate in the same way, and you are trying to use a English pattern that doesn't necessarily keep the same meaning in Mandarin. And actually, "good to (whatever)" is a bit ambiguous. Good to eat could mean it tastes good, or its good for you. In your "good to study" example, it would be translated as: 在你去中国之前，学点中文对你有好处 (zài nǐ qù zhōngguó zhī qián, xué diǎn zhōngwén duì nǐ yǒu hǎochù) here, the ...对你有好处 (....duì nǐ yǒu hǎochù) carries the "good for you to.... " meaning.

April 29, 2008 at 2:00 AMhezhicheng, If you omit the 多 in this sentence, the meaning will change. it would sound more like, "Right now he would like to make a friend or two" But with the 多, it emphasizes that he really wants to make more than just a few friends.

April 30, 2008 at 1:30 AMAs for the girlyness of these modal particles, they are more frequent in females, but men do use them. Just dont drawn them out like connie or amber do. A quick hao'a won't get you fellas any concerned looks. And as connie mentioned, out of the yuqici's, this one will be the most frequently used by men. and, she is just a friend....
