March 3, 2008 at 1:26 AMeastcostyankee, as you know, 对 (duì) does carry the meaning correct, as shown in your example. here is a construction which alters the meaning to "in regards/concerning" 对...来说 (duì...lái shuō). 对我来说。。。 (duì wǒ lái shuō...) as far as I'm concerned... 对他来说。。。(duì tā lái shuō...) as far as he is concerned... and here is where it means "towards"... 他对我笑 （tā duì wǒ xiào） He laughed at me [he towards me laughed] 他对我说 （tā duì wǒ shuō） He said to me [he towards me said]

March 3, 2008 at 1:10 AMearly bird, the girls are telling me that , 愉快 (yúkuài) delighted, has a similar meaning to, 高兴(興) (gāoxìng) happy, but it is more bookish, regardless of location.

February 29, 2008 at 7:08 AMalijm, the Beijing "r" slur at the end of certain words will often negate the last consonant. So, ever as it is written with two separate characters, it is pronounced as one. i used to make teachers cringe with my over pronunciation of "dian......er" when reading aloud passages. You learn to shorten up that pause, and then eliminate it all together to get that nice Beijing slur.

February 28, 2008 at 6:47 AMaaronposehn, there isn't really much of a difference in meaning, but 好久没见 (hǎojiǔméijiàn) is much less frequent. Connie even goes as far to say it just sounds weird to her.

February 28, 2008 at 6:42 AMrichnirish, to the inquiry:最近怎么样？ would the replies: 不错 还好 还可以 海星 马马虎虎 all mean the same thing and all be acceptable? The most common replies would be: 还好 (hái hǎo) 还可以 (hái kěyǐ) 还行 (háixíng) not 海星 starfish, btw!
