triphazard, ive had this discussion with chinese people a few times. ive noticed that most westerners will precede with a 请问 (qǐngwèn) or a 可以 (kěyǐ) before saying 买单 (mǎidān) , but you rarely see the chinese say it. It is perfectly naturally just to say mǎidān.
