there are two other Roups lurking about. Pops will be easy to spot with the lasso avatar, as he is an old cowboy. Big brother has only dropped in once.

Pipsy, ha. that is pretty funny. This lesson is actually in honor of my old man. he comes to China maybe twice a year, so he is newbie at best. We tried to come up with the most simplistic way that typical non-speaking Chinese business type could get a cigarette and a light. So Pops...learn it and don't say i don't look out for you.

With talk of vapor rubs and garlic remedies, I am surprised no one has mentioned Tiger Balm yet. I lived off that stuff in highschool. i think that was the only thing in our athletic trainers bag. Sore arm, jammed thumb, sprained ankle... tiger balm.

Bazza, Connie tells me one cannot smoke on the train itself, but you can while you are waiting for it on the platform. I'm so oblivious to smokers and smoking now, I never really notice....outside of elevators! That is the worst for me. Smokey bar no problem, a smokey 4 foot wide elevator is a different story... (and yes, they are no smoking signs posted inside)

babliku, You are spot on. The hainanese chicken rice is better in singapore. This is mainly due to the lack of sauce on the hainan version. Ive acutally had the chicken in the tiny town of WenChang (which is where most if not all the chickens come from) and I remember the very same thing....This is not as good as it was in Singapore. Perhaps I am partial to the singapore cuisine. My favorite dish ever was Char Siu rice/mee (especially Mr.Ho's version at SAS) i cant find it anywhere! there are a couple singapore restaurants here in Shanghai that i havent hit up yet, so ill keep searching.
