January 23, 2010 at 8:21 PMshanghai_rocks, I've never used that site before. Looks like a keeper! 谢谢。
By the way, that 56.com site is addictive. I watched http://www.56.com/u76/v_MTk3OTY3MjE.html and really enjoyed it! In my very, very limited understanding of Chinese, that is.

January 22, 2010 at 6:48 PMI am struggling through Curious George Takes a Job (children's book) and found this lesson because I did not quite understand 早就. Amber and all, your comments are so helpful.
Kudos to the actor who, in this dialogue, says:
我早就告诉过你了。Wǒ zǎojiù gàosù guò nǐ le. I told you so.
I did not understand the dialogue on first hearing (I'm elementary level) but he delivered that line so well I understood it and it was laugh-out-loud funny! A very useful line I can't wait to use on my family members!
Here is the line from Curious George:
已经太尺了,乔治早就走了。
Yǐjīng tài chí le, qiáo zhì zǎo jiù zǒu le.
It was already too late. George was long gone. (George had long since left)

January 20, 2010 at 9:25 AMmisterjess, 失眠 is a good one for my vocabulary list! Do you or anyone know how to say:
I suffer from insomnia.
I have insomnia.
I am so tired! My insomnia kicked in/bothered me last night.
...or any similar versions of the idea? (I really do have a sleep problem and could use these phrases.)

January 23, 2010 at 9:17 PMThe only formal Chinese training I've had was in a U.S. junior college, and we used Integrated Chinese. That is where I suspect many of us learned "shui4 jiao4."
The Chinese students (who were taking the class for an easy "A") often criticized that textbook for not teaching the way people really speak Chinese.
This lesson is one of the several in which I have noticed a difference between IC and CP. Maybe, the difference between a somewhat uncomfortable textbook and real Chinese speak.
