September 3, 2012 at 2:42 AMI use the Chinese characters because it tells you to read it in Chinese instead of English. In this day and age of globalization, you have Taglish (Tagalog and English), Spanglish (Spanish and English) and my daughter mixing Chinese and English. But perhaps this is how it appears on the Internet, I don't use QQ, I do know the younger generation have their own way of communicating with each other.

September 1, 2012 at 12:57 AMI do not remember seeing a Chinese grammar book until much recently. I spent most of my time learning to write Chinese characters, remembering their Zhu Yin and of course, writing sentences and essays. We followed the Taiwan curriculum and learned sentence structures, measure words etc. I think this grammer reference is a PROC thing and a recent development.
The challenge in learning Chinese is it is difficult even at the basic level -- you have to know 2,000 characters (and their pronunciation) to be considered as functionally literate. But the grammar is quite simple. By contrast, Spanish is easy on the basic level but gets complicated in the higher level.
My wish is they would get rid of the 3rd tone but maybe my ancestors might get offended and today is a day of honoring them within the context of Chinese tradition and culture.
We are going to have a hectic Labor Day Weekend with parties, outing and friends visiting from California, Chicago etc.
Happy Labor Day Weekend everyone and TGIF!
