I don't smoke but some of my teaching colleagues do and the big problem in China is that cigarettes are relatively cheap, so it's easier to smoke alot more here.

yeah, it's a funny thing, to feel insecure in a country like China, eh?but, I get the same attitude from other English speaking people when I tell them I'm from America. My room mate at my school is Scottish, you might think he comes from high society. LOL But seriously dude, if you could drop any thing in any foreign language, would you love to see it smash to bits? It's a personal problem I know I have, trying to be intelligent when I'm not.

You're looking at things the wrong way here...it's sorta like being a supreme court nominee, the less history behind one, the better, after all, exprience is not quite the good thing, as the more history one has, the less chance one can have of being able to fake anything reasonably well. that's why I don't have it in my intellectual heart to get down on the more recent targets of the Nazis, Soviets and even the economic zaibatsus in Japan, dig deep enough and you'll find most societies getting on the wrong side of history easy enough. yeah, it's very fashionable to jump on and expose the historical fraud in America too. Sorta reminds me of the conversation I had with my cab driver who takes me back and forth to my one High School job, he first mentioned to me about his dislike for the Japanese, and I jokenly brought up the phrase '日本鬼子‘ and then he started ripping into the Americans in what I thought him mentioning alot in his Chinese, '美鬼’ unless he was talking about 玫瑰, which I highly doubt, anyway, he succeeded in making me feel very uncomfortable, and all the while he was pointing to his portraid of 毛主席, stating with a lot of pride how he was never intimidated by these 美鬼! LOL, served me right for offering up the Japanese for the cultural slaughter and not expecting the same judgement I so easily passed off on them! If one is to have any kind of reasonable self esteem about the political geographical influences of one's birth background, one needs to ignore most of the history that falls around it...I'm getting too old to suffer from these guilt by association trips anyway.
