October 24, 2011 at 12:09 AMWe'll need a teacher's verification here, but I want to see if I understand this usage correctly. I think “的” is used because the verb is followed by an unspoken noun. Another example could be “他所说的都不对”,where the unspoken noun is “话”;the full sentence would read, "他所说的话都不对“。The example in the dialogue (“它强调的是。。。”) could be translated "The point that it emphasizes is...". It is the noun "point" (as in "the emphasized point") that is unspoken.
To use “得”,I think the verb has to be followed by an adverb rather than a noun, like “他跑得很快。”
How cool that Jenny, Greg, and Connie made a whole lesson out of my question on "他在上海住过。” I feel honored! And impressed...the teachers are so responsive to questions students have...they must spend some portion of every day weeding through everything we write!

October 21, 2011 at 9:17 AMyingshilangbu, 恐怕我听错了,但是如果我听对的话,在课文里他们说了罚款是一个夫妻的一年的工资的三倍。同学们,你们能说我听错了没有?

October 19, 2011 at 2:13 AMIt's not uncommon for Chinese spouses to live apart, but it's been my experience that they live apart for financial reasons; I've known couples living apart who are certainly still quite in love, and, as soon as circumstances allow, are back in the same city again.
Divorces occur, although certainly not nearly as often as in America. A couple living in my building is in the process of getting a divorce. I think this will become more common as time goes on, and is probably already more common in the bigger cities.

October 17, 2011 at 12:29 AMIs this correct to express "First I'll finish my homework, then I'll go play"?
我做完了作业,再去玩儿。
Could this be used by a teacher gently requiring a student to finish his homework before going to play?
你做完了作业,再去玩儿吧。
Could this be used to express "Let's finish our homework first, then go play?"
我们做完了作业,再去玩儿吧。

October 17, 2011 at 12:08 AMLately I have also had a variety of difficulties getting into Chinese Pod from inside China, but it is not just Chinese Pod. A variety of sites have been giving me trouble, while I have no trouble with other sites. This means it's not a problem related to Chinese Pod...it's the internet system in China. This morning, hurrah, everything is working beautifully, no matter what site I try! This problem should pass, given a week or so. (At least, it has in the past.) You may find that it's useless getting into some sites on a Saturday or Sunday evening, but that they work just fine in the mornings.

October 13, 2011 at 8:32 AMQuestion:
”我们就觉得很gaoshao很fuqian“ : This phrase comes right after Jenny and Jiaojie have said they haven't watched the movie. What do the words "gaoshao" and "fuqian" mean? I may not have the pinyin correct!

October 25, 2011 at 2:40 PMThanks, Grambers, I had always wondered about this, as I had it backwards in my mind, but knew that polite people often used '知道了' when receiving new information. Now, I will be able to use it as well!
