The politest way to do this that I have found, skib, is to say something like, "No, no, it's my turn, if you pay again, I'll be terribly embarrassed!" And, have the money already in your hand, outstretched to the waiter, stretching your arm out further then your friend's arm if necessary! If you are insistent enough, smiling yet confident, the "terribly embarrassed" line often works, because they know it's really your turn to pay, and they don't want you to be embarrassed. Try to have the money in hand before the bill is even brought to the table, and establish direct eye contact with the waiter, pushing him to take your money. You can go one step further and say, "I will be too embarrassed to eat with you next time if you pay again this time; how can I do that?!"

However, out of desperation, after having been treated out three times in a row by a particular friend, my husband simply excused himself from the table near the end of a meal, found a waiter, paid the bill, then came back to the table quietly. When our friend discovered what we'd done, I'm afraid they were a bit embarrassed, but since then, they have allowed us to pay for every other meal or so. I don't recommend this route, since your friend will be a bit embarrassed, but it did work, and we are very good friends with this person now.

Oops, my husband says you're right, zhenlijiang, it is baby octopus.

I really enjoy Pizza Hut's menu here - there's a rice dish with sausage that I simply adore. (Although, it seems to have just been sadly discontinued!)

But, I have to admit, I look forward to this summer, when I'll be back in the States for a visit, and can have some Domino's!

Squid and Quail's Eggs

Here's a picture of the squid and quail's eggs! My husband ate one of the heads before he took the picture.

My husband also enjoys KFC's New Orleans sandwich. I love their Mexican-flavor wraps, which are also a bit tangy. I find the Beijing-flavor wraps to be too sweet for me.

My husband and I just had squid and quail egg at Pizza Hut for supper tonight. The quail egg was neatly packed inside the squid's head, from which the brains had been removed.

Actually, I should have said, MY HUSBAND just had squid and quail egg at Pizza Hut. I myself ordered the spaghetti and a bowl of cream of corn soup.

Thank you zhenlijiang...I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I hadn't listened to the lesson when I made that post! Thanks for typing that saying out...it is the saying printed on the little coffins I bought.

The picture of the coffin reminds me of a saying I heard a while back...but much of the saying eludes me. Can anyone help?  Part of it goes something like this, "If you want to marry, go to ???, because they have pretty girls; if you want to die, go to Guangxi, because they have good coffins."

The saying stuck in my mind because I was traveling in Guangxi at the time, and you can buy mini-coffins (two inches long, four inches long) that open and shut at most touristy sites.  I bought several to take home to friends! (The "coffins" all have a saying on them, some kind of wordplay with "coffin" and "luck" I think, but I can't recall it exactly.)
