April 28, 2012 at 5:37 PMUniversities (to Americans - colleges) in the US have been taken a beating in the reputation department lately.
Grade inflation. ROI (return on investment). Dumbed down courses. High cost - 50K a year USD. While it's hard to dumb down something like physics, organic chemistry or computer science, the trend is that people are questioning the model/paradigm.
Of course, despite that, no one is going to turn down an acceptance to a top tier school if they can help it, but the cost is just crazy out of this world.

April 27, 2012 at 6:06 PMI agree with both points John made above on the transcripts being good and bad and learning systematically.
I also thought that it would be nice to have transcripts along with all the lessons, but I found that through listening to the dialog again and again and transcribing the lessons, I retained and understood what I learned much better than reading an available transcript. It sticks with you longer.
What I found is that there are a handful words that escape me, that I can't figure out. It would be nice to have figured out what they are, but then, like the real world, things are imperfect. I learned to let it go and eventually, I'll figure out what they are, either by serendipity or by listening and reviewing again.
And I'm glad that the speakers in the lessons speak as fast as they do though it can be frustrating at times. It makes the transition to real world dialogue less of a shock.

April 14, 2012 at 4:05 PMWhenever I think of the Ironman, I think of the US sargent who does it with his son, Team Hoyt.
He pulls him swimming, has him in front of the bike and pushes him running. Pretty inspirational.

February 25, 2012 at 6:16 PMOh and how can I forget - work from home/telecommute option. This is huge for some people. Usually this means you're issued a laptop - which can be good or bad depending on how good your IT department is, although BYOD is getting popular.
