June 15, 2011 at 6:03 PMmy understanding is that hui is ability and neng is someone being able to do something due to having the option.
Here is a good example i saw.
If someone burns the turkey then 'he can't cook' - use hui
If someone's oven is broke then 'he can't cook' use neng
After I saw this example it made more sense to me.

December 30, 2011 at 12:34 AMWhen i first started learning chinese I thought to myself that i would never learn characters but 2 months ago i started to learn just 10 new characters a week. I seem to be learning them quite easily so far.
I have a one hour lesson per week with a taiwanese tutor who helps me with speaking. I hope that is enough to progress. Other than that i study pinyin 1 hour per day, with a goal to get to conversational level by the end of next year. I've been learning for a year and a half already.
