April 17, 2011 at 10:47 PMHe means the pronunciation of the letter. USA say zee. As in the rapper Jay zee. and Brits say Zed as in "Zed's dead baby. Zed's dead". I'm sure that Ozzy's say Zee as well? Well i thought.
Posted on: How Did You Learn Chinese?
April 11, 2011 at 6:52 PMAgainst most people's advice. i'm trying to learn without chinese characters. I seem to be doing well at the moment after 10 months, and i've already managed to teach myself french. So far, i'm learning mandarin at a much quicker pace than when i was learning french. I often hear that your second foreign language is easier maybe that is true.So far i've just been using the usual self-study methods -
Chinesepod.com, Pimsleur, Rosetta stone, FSI, Assimil, Anki, Micheal Thomas

Can I ask two questions about the dialogue.
1. A mandarin book i have teaches me to say 'Nǐ shì nǎr de rén?' but the de is missing here?
2. Can I say 'nǐ zài nǎ ge dàxué xué?' and leave off the 'xi'?

March 13, 2011 at 1:56 PMI have a website suggestion - I'm currently at the elementary level and i've been looking through the Qing wen lessons. Is there a recommendation of when we should start using these? They seem to have different difficult levels depending on the subject. It would be good if i could subscribe to just elementary 'qing wen' lessons.

January 17, 2011 at 6:42 PMFor the sentance "nǐ zìjǐ wèn tā ba". If i just said "nǐ wèn tā ba" that would be ok? Is "zìjǐ" just used for emphases as in english.

April 24, 2011 at 6:28 PMVery helpful thanks. I personally don't know anyone else who is learning mandarin so it's helpful to hear other people's issues while learning, which are similar to mine.
