Are they used as adverbs and 口语 kǒuyǔ (spoken language)？

Please read what he found out:
"The very original meaning of “行李” is "emissary, envoy", and the word later obtained the secondary meaning "traveler", and finally "luggage".
Actually, “行李” (xing2 li3) was originally “行理” (xing2 li3) in ancient times, and the “行 and “理” indicate “go” and “manage, deal with （办理，处理）” respectively, which clearly suggests emissaries' task. "

very interesting what you say about the origine of 东西。
As to 李 the French dictionary Ricci names among other significations..voyager/messager..(to travel / messenger) but doesn't explains how it evolved. Hi pharmatronix,"travelprune"(Reisepflaume) is a cute and daring intuition!

BTW I always felt very 舒服 shūfū, when Chinese people rewarded my akward trials to utter five words of Chinese with an exuberant compliment. This sort of compliments and politeness is really soothing for the struggling 学生。It gives hope and support.Unfortunately one doesn't experience that at the same extent in western countries.
