Wildyaks, Amber, & Jon Thanks for the help sorting out 除了. I'm sure all will become clear with a bit more experience and practice.

Wildyaks Not looking for a literal translation, but a better understanding of usage to I can form my own sentences using 除了. The problem I was having was determining what kind of sentence should use 除了... one that excludes the noun following 除了or includes in addition to the noun at the end of the sentence. From the lesson I gathered that the usage was to exclude, but the other examples I've seen seem to be more inclusionary.

Amber Even your example: 除了苹果,我还想买一点香蕉。 Seems as if the meaning is in addition to the bananas. But the lesson implies that 除了 means something along the lines of "except for". I kind of see what you're doing with your examples (kind of), but really need to look at the examples in the grammar guide to REALLY get it. However, I dont think I would say Except for these apples I will buy bananas. Seems like I would say "in addition to these bananas...." which still sounds a little bit like a sentence I could also form using 还有。

Why does this sound a little like an episode of THE OFFICE?

我的台湾朋友告诉我只会叫男人“二百五“。对不对? 她也告诉我怎么叫女人“三八“后者“三八婆“.

I'm a little confused by the use of 除了. In the lesson we're told that it functions similar to "besides" or "other than", but when attempting to use this phrase today I was immediately given strange looks of confusion. It seems that 除了 is closer to 还有 in meaning (or "in addition to..."). 对不对?

Yeah I dread the News and Features appearing on my iPod... my fingers are constantly reaching for the FF button when it seems that song is about to launch.
