情人节快乐! (qing ren jie kuai le) Happy Valentines Day!

To me it seems the Chinese "version" of this holiday would be "七夕" (qī xī) or "The Night of Sevens" otherwise known as "The Cowherd and the Weaver" story.

I did some reading and seems some people may agree with that. I've heard the story for years and thought of this right away after hearing this podcast, why I didn't make that connection before I don't know, haha.

One thing I found the first time I was asked to sign something [here in Shanghai] was that since I hadn't actually "written" my Chinese name since I needed to write it on my Chinese homework (2 years ago?) I had completely forgotten how.... I had to sign my English name.... If you don't practice you really lose the "flow" of writing in Chinese, luckily with a little pen-to-paper practice I'm back to normal.

My Chinese name is: 柯思蕊 (ke si rui)

@Changye, have you ever heard of the Chinese "joke" about being a flirtatious person if you have multiple 心 in your name?

I can just see Jenny and Connie's reaction to that "I would chase him down and beat him to a bloody pulp!" 哈哈哈 (I would too Pete)

tabushuai,
I totally agree with you, I think religion throughout the history of China is a very interesting topic! and I for one love that type of discussion. I just worry about how this topic can very quickly turn bad and into nothing but an argument with neither side gaining anything from it.
However there are lots of places to discuss that on the net, I'm just not sure thats what people are looking for here. (This particular discussion is for 1 completely off topic from the lesson, and 2 seems to be about to become an argument rather than a discussion)

This a place to learn Mandarin not argue about religion. Everyone has a right to think whatever they want about whatever they want, even if its completely incorrect, but this is not place to voice it guys. Maybe you could continue your discussion via email.

I think Pete is trying as hard as he can to not let this become an argument, so lets all get back on topic.
(sorry for being the hall monitor, but is not conducive to an academic atmosphere)

The no-lipstick-rule is actually a very good idea, I read a book called "Toxic Beauty" which is all about the nasty chemicals in beauty products and lipstick can be one of the worst... I don't think anyone should use it, (especially pregnant women!) yay for China!

"Every year we each absorb an estimated 2 kilograms of chemicals through beauty and cosmetic products. Chemicals found in lipsticks, skin lotions and hair dyes have been linked with tumours, cell mutation, allergies, reproductive complications, endocrine disruption and cancer."- Dawn Mellowship, Toxic Beauty.

Wow I'm surprised the painting got so much response, 哈哈。You poddies didnt study much art in school did you?

And yes, one of the main reasons I like Wáng Wéi (王维) so much is because he was also a very famous painter. He actually founded "The Southern School of the Chinese Landscape Painting," and being a painter myself (and loving anything Chinese) I love his work.

This is the painting that goes with the poem, he is one of my favorite Chinese poets! I think its important to have his painting along with the poem, (I the think visuals help memory.)
