I have to say in the bigger citys, especially with the collage educated young men most of that kind behavior has been washed out due to more world exposure, the more rural areas I'm not so sure about...
I believe there is some kind of humorous saying about Shanghainese men in particular being... more easily pushed about by their girlfriends?

December 13, 2008 at 10:32 AMAfter talking to some of my local Chinese (guy) friends I have found that there are a lot of things that come into play that make a Chinese guy think twice about dating a western girl, (no surprise.)
One thing is the height issue, they said they would never date a girl taller than them. Another obvious one is that the beauty ideals of Chinese vs. "western" is pretty different, but they do love what they call "big" eyes that apparently "western" women have. And then there is the fear of lack of English fluency, they don't want to "sound dumb" (that never even came to my mind, I think they sound cute :) Also the idea that all expat women are either married or have boyfriends back home. But the biggest one was that they thought most foreign women would be making more money than them, they want to be the "rice"-winner, ( yes, stole that line from Cpod's last lesson, hehe.)
I just wonder how did the Chinese girls get over all this and the guys didn't? You'd think they would with the 4/1 ratio of men to women in China...

Thanks Changye! I love how its still very integrated in Chinese life (of the older people at least.) My (Shanghainese) boyfriend's mother just spent about a week looking at a special old Chinese calender in order to pick an important date, (I dont remember the name of the calender in Chinese.)
I also remember reading something that said the Chinese zodiac has shifted (it is based on the stars,) and that since 2000+ years have passed since the creation of the Chinese zodiac it should now be about a year off (I cant remember in which direction) has anyone else heard of this?

December 13, 2008 at 3:59 AMHaha, I'm engaged to a local Shanghainese guy. We've been dating for well over a year. And (if I remember correctly) I talked to him first, I think they expect you to talk to them if you are interested, and they are a lot more shy than the guys in the U.S.
One thing I did notice was most Chinese guys really worry about hight. Thats one thing I have heard from more than one local guy when talking about this subject... (I'm 5'3...) there is an idea that all "western" women are very tall.

I think I have been using "除了" the wrong way... oops, I think there are some chinese people out there I have really confused...
BTW, where did Clay go, out of curiosity?

December 12, 2008 at 5:03 AMThanks Jenny!
that answers my question, I just thought maybe there was some kind of zodiac only vocabulary, (such as 属.)

December 12, 2008 at 4:50 AMKen & Jenny,
"whats your Chinese zodiac animal?" is what I've always heard in English. If you say "sign" most people think of "Sun Sign" which is originally Greek, (Scorpio, Sagittarius, Leo etc.)
Cpod Community,
我是属"龙"的.
How do you say for instance you are an "Earth, Dragon"? any special way?
Each Chinese animal sign has one of the five elements attached to it, they also have either Yin or Yang. Those differ depending on year of course. It is supposed to affect the personality of the person born in that year.

December 13, 2008 at 5:03 PMHere is another funny version of the stereotype, although this takes place in the U.S. not China...
