July 26, 2011 at 11:08 AMWhen I was a tour guide, I was asked (by tour agencies) to take my clients to some certain tea houses, pearl factories or fabric markets. I don't like doing that and it was what ended my tour guide career. It seems that quite a lot of my foreign friends were taken to those kind of places and got ripped off.
A friendly reminder: like what John said, don't go to tea houses with strangers you meet on Nanjing Road or near the Bund. Or at least ask about the price before you buy any.
