October 24, 2011 at 4:34 AM我很少在网上卖衣服就是因为在网上卖衣服无法先试试看衣服是否合身。我对买衣服比较挑剔。可是我在美国的时经常用得亚马逊,主要是买书和音乐。

October 19, 2011 at 2:41 AMOhhh, 'visa issues'.. certainly, certainly had some of those before. Hong Kong runs, borderline visa expiry, schools wanting to give me an L or F visa... A very pertinent lesson to Westerners living in, or thinking of living in China.
One question, I'm now in the position where I have to interview candidates. I know how to say I have a job interview “我要去面试”, but how would I express that I need to interview someone else. Could I say, "我今天要面试一位候选人/申请人。“?

October 17, 2011 at 1:10 PMThe fact that this lesson description says at the end: "This lesson will also help you Americans out there make a comparison." Well, I'm an American and this to me is not insulting, though it is sort of a cheap shot. The Chinese history is long, and yes that is interesting. Personally I think it's cool. Everyday I have Chinese people tell me, "Our China has 5000 years of history.." Then they ask rhetorically, "How many years does the USA have?" I know they feel proud of this and good about this. And that's ok.. If I was Chinese I would be proud of this fact too. But, to look at this in another way, what's the significance of a long history? Another thing to ponder, does coming from an old civilization make one more 'special' or better than any way than a person like me, a common man from the USA?
So, because this lesson is a cheap shot at America, I will counter with this, in good spirit of course, no hard feelings intended ------ Yes China has a long history, but as a nation China is very young. With the continued time advantage that China has over the US, they should be waaayyyy further along in terms of accomplishments and progress. So I would back the US by saying, don't measure it in terms of time, measure it in terms of accomplishments. Don't get me wrong, I like China and enjoy my time here. But this is a fair 'comeback', is it not?
In the end, it doesn't really matter. We shouldn't try to take credit for what others have done, and we shouldn't try to make ourselves feel superior or more 'special' because we may happen to come from a ancient civilization. These things are really quite absurd to me. Furthermore, when someone tries to make themselves seem special because of where they are from it screams of personal insecurity.
However, living in China this is something that comes up often. I have heard some people make snide remarks about the USA. It's just part of life. But, we certainly do have a right to counter such remarks and challenge them, or at least engage them in a meaningful conversation.

October 17, 2011 at 12:51 PMActually I too have to haggle over 4 RMB almost everyday. Not because of the money, but out of principle. The city I live in, 黑河, 就是在黑龙江的中俄边境. So, the taxi drivers assume I am a "老毛子" (their name for Russians in this area) and try to charge me a higher taxi fare. Local Chinese get a ride to anywhere in the city for 6 kuai; Russians, however, pay a minimum of 10 kuai. The majority of the Russian tourists don't know any better, so they willingly pay it. I do not pay it however... Most drivers don't cause too much of a fuss over it, since they know that I'm not Russian, but every once in a while I get a shady driver.
