Interesting info. I'll try 葡萄柚 for once and see how it works. On the mainland, in nice supermarkets, they are very familiar with 西柚. Your friend may have never had a western grapefruit. Many Chinese have never tried them. They usually eat pomelo.

手机停机了 is something you'll hear a lot when you try to call someone and their cell phone service has been cut off, for one reason or another. If money is the issue, and the phone is out of credit the correct term would be 'qian fei', or 欠费。

@ Jenny, or DiLu, or Connie

Actually, I know some Chinese people in the USA that have gone camping and absolutely loved it. However, Chinese in mainland China, by and large, have never been camping. So, because they've never been maybe they think, "Oh, we don't like it." But the truth is, they have never experienced it, at least not in the sense as Westerners refer to camping. The only camping I've really heard about in China is on mountains, such at Tai Shan in Shandong, so they can see the sunrise the next morning.

In most nice supermarkets in medium- or large-sized cities, it's pretty easy to get some good grapefruit imported from the US. However, in the remote location I'm currently in, grapefruit are just simply unavailable. I have seen that term 葡萄柚 in dictionaries, but never actually heard it used in real life.

Movie suggestion for Jenny: The Great Outdoors, starring John Candy. Very funny film related to this topic.

Jenny, do you ever get the Chinesepod crew together and go out for a 烧烤 night? Who is the best drinker of the staff at Chinesepod?

Hi Pombili. I apologize but I won't be able to teach you the Chinese characters. I would suggest you start with pinyin. Also, if you are just getting started in Chinese, I would suggest that start with the Newbie or Beginner lessons, not Upper Intermediate.
