October 12, 2011 at 3:13 AMJust a heads up on a very small typo that I found in the PDF 翻译稿。 On the last sentence of the dialogue, from character A, he says, "留个联系方式” but the pinyin is written as "LIAN JI" instead of "LIAN XI".

October 11, 2011 at 2:20 AMA little question about grapefruit. In China when I go to buy a 柚子 they always give me this big, nasty, gargantuan piece of fruit--like a grapefruit on steroids. It's really dry and hard to peel. So, now when I go to the supermarket, if I'm searching for grapefruit (ruby red or something like that) I'll tell them I am looking for some 西柚。 Am I correct in this terminology?

October 9, 2011 at 4:12 AMNo, they wouldn't really care. I've lived in China for over 3 years and learned Mandarin with a northeastern pronunciation. When I'm in the south they can understand me very clearly and don't think of it as being awkward. If you want to try to sound like a real local, then you could try to speak just like the locals, but with one look at you they'd know you're not local anyway. Furthermore, cities like Shanghai are full of people from all over China, and from many countries around the globe as well.

Regarding camping outdoors, you mentioned that Chinese don't see such activities as being a "delight", or being an enjoyable experience. Well, I don't think most Chinese have tried it. From most of what I have seen in China, there aren't so many places suitable for camping outdoors. But imagine this for a second: you go to a very beautiful clean national park. You set up a tent, or park your 房车 near a crystal clear lake, you're with your family/friends/or... significant other, whatever, you're surrounding by trees, there's no pollution, you bring some food to cook over the grill or campfire.... and it gives you a chance to reconnect with nature--something that so many of us are lacking. Beyond the serenity of the experience itself, it's a great time to bond and spend quality time with those you care about. Point being: sometimes a willingness to view things with an open mind can be a good thing, otherwise you may miss out on many things that life offers. Heck, you could even try skinny dipping (you may have to ask John what that one means...hehe...)!
