旧书，旧车，旧衣服，旧房子 implies that it's worn out, outdated. 旧友 is also OK, but it is literary language and sounds formal.
老 can be used for both both people and things, seems more abstract, for example, 老人，老朋友，老同学，老张老王，老房子 implies ”respect，cherish，deep feelings"
There is overlap, for example, 旧脑筋/老脑筋， 老机器/旧机器。 They both have the sense of outdated.
However, 你看起来一点儿也不老。can not be: 你看起来一点儿也不旧。
