Hi xiaophil and rich,

I don' t think words containing 馆 (e.g. 旅馆,报馆 and so on) are more commonly used in the North than the South.

Both Northerners and Southerners say "旅馆”。 ‘报馆” is a very word-- people these days say “报社”。

Just 饭馆 are more commonly used in the North.

饭馆儿 (fànguǎnr)and 饭店(fàndiàn)are both common in the north.

餐厅 (cāntīng)has a more modern connotation than 食堂(shítáng), so we say: 西餐厅(xī cāntīng)

ridley:

zhi3 can not be used instead of cai2.
zhi3 should be used before a verb, for example:
只来了一个人。
Zhǐ lái le yī gèrén.

cai2 can be used before a verb or a time word/quantifier.

Changye is right. "来" in the example shows that you are already in Beijing.

Changye is right. 做 is used for words that mean "making/doing something concrete/mundane and 作 is for making/doing something abstract.
