Most English speakers in Shanghai will know what an "ayi" is (a maid/cleaner/cook)." (Maxiewawa) but do they know 'ayi' in Chinese means something different most of the time? and that they too can be called 'ayi' by little children, and don't have to feel 'insulted'?
