September 10, 2012 at 9:56 PMdespite Chicago gang wars and near bankruptcy, the teachers show there 'caring support' for students.
( the union said the two sides are close to a pay agreement after school officials offered to increase salaries 16% over four years on average for most teachers. The average teacher salary in Chicago was $74,839 for the 2011-2012 school year, according to the district.) [ maybe ChinesePod's 老师 would teach for must less and do a better job :>) ]

September 7, 2012 at 5:33 PMthe reason the universities (and private schools) do WAY better is because someone PAYS for it-not the government.
free education is what it's worth....nothing.
Like ChinesePod. we pay for it so we USE it. if it was free, how much effort would be put into learning?
and then free public school education is not FREE. the waste, uneducated students they turn out actually cost the country in lower standards of living, crime, drug use(more students smoke marijuana than cigarettes), etc. and many students who enter the university and have to take remedial ENGLISH! go figure.
If you speak with teenagers, you can easily guess if they attend a public or private school.
Finally, you and I, the taxpayer, will be paying for the rest of our lives to fund someone else education. not so if everyone was responsible for their own.
I am not here to rile things up. ( I know there are good public schools and bad private schools. Not all public school students turn out badly and all private school students turn out perfectly. ) everyone makes his/her own choices/decisions. just want to give my opinion 'socialization'-the other side of the coin

September 7, 2012 at 5:10 PMI just so happens another case(symptom) of the the public school system being in disarray. It's more of the same.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/05/teacher-of-the-year-sexual-assault_n_1857467.html?utm_hp_ref=mostpopular
when I mentioned this issue to my Chinese friends (the ones that live in China) I was met with incredulity. In fact, when I mentioned in the public schools, they have play areas/nursery for the children of the student/mothers who are 13, 14, 15 16 17, they either thought I was joking or 神经病。
so as I see it, the choices are Pay for private school or flee the public school.
the system will not change for the better-only get worst.
the cliche that your kids won't be 'socialized' if home schooled is die's hard.
my concern is why would someone want to subject their child to 'public school' socialization?
and the saying it's the parent's fault (for not teaching virtues and making sure their children are conscientious students) is missing the point....public school student's parents are products themselves of the public school system. the wheel goes round and round. the only way to break the cycle is to GET OFF THE MERRY GO ROUND.

September 7, 2012 at 3:23 PMOn NHK they had a story about Kunming. being the hub to the Mekong delta, 黄牛 is florishing due to the local merchant don't want Myanmar's kyat and the banks won't exchange it either. time to open up shop there(illegally I might add :)- 开玩笑 )
