LA 'official' language is spanish. 'columbine syndrome', teacher's 'cavorting' with students, the jail like atmosphere (you can't get into many inner city schools without going through a metal detector, barred windows, single entrance/exit), drugs, bullying, pregnancy, poor test results(many third world countries have better schooling, why would public schools be the 'first' choice to learn socialization?

Most well off families (and a majority of public school teachers) send their kids to private school. (what politician in DC sends their kids to the DC public school system? )

the child's end results have a lot to do with parenting choices.

quote from the article below:

'Of 30 comparable countries, the United States ranks near the bottom. Take math - Finland is first, followed by South Korea, and the United States is number 25. Same story in science: Finland, number one again. The United States? Number 21.'

(of course not all homeschooled or public/private school students turn out good/badly, but giving your child the 'best' chances to succeed with what you have is what you should do. Parents make the choices that affect their children's and in turn the their lives.)

I'm not advocating 'homeschool'(but an alternative to families that can't afford to send their children to private schools). Just get rid of the 'government controlled' schools.

stereotypes died hard

Homeschooling changes the focus of the responsibility of the child's education from the 'school' to the parent. because it's 'yours', you own it you will take care of it. public education in the USA is in shambles.

'socialization' is just an overused a cliche .

aren't poddies being 'homeschooled' anyhow?

I've also heard '哦,明白了'. Is this an equivalent to '我知道了'?

knocking on the door is very different from pounding on the door.

To get someone's attention if they were sleeping, pounding on the door would be the better verb. how would you say loudly knocking or pounding on the door?

受到 收到 。  What is the difference?  if the first one receiving something non-physical?  Please give some examples.

I noticed in Elementary 'Paying a bill'  (B0519) this sentence using jieshou.

 你的帐单过期了。这里不接受

nǐ de zhàngdān guòqī le. zhèlǐ bù jiēshòu.

Your bill is overdue. We don't accept it here.

isn't this something physical so why is this used?  should it be 接收

sounds like it's better to be the borrower than the lender.

when friends borrow, think 'grant' or 'ex-friend'.

How common are 当铺 in China? Now here's a topic for your '头脑风暴'

I guess 借钱 can also mean lend money? a little tricky.

This past summer I got some great pictures of the xiongmao taken at the Shanghai Zoo.

However, it was an eye opener(to put it diplomatic terms) in that no one follows the signs that say 'Don't Feed the Animals'  and the tiger's favorite meal/toy was 'water bottles' tossed into the pen.

And to get better pictures 'with the animals' they would 'hop' the fence(with non-dangerous animals).

Hilarious!  Now I know what they mean by loving your job and getting paid for it.

I think then can find  tons of 'volunteers'.
