Posted on: The 是...的 (Shì...de) Pattern
August 15, 2012 at 2:05 AM darkstar94 in reply to darkstar94 ![]()
would it use 是。。。的 pattern or something?
do you remember what you meant when you asked this? ( http://chinesepod.com/lessons/the-%E7%9D%80-zhe-chronicles-how-we-verb )
So the Shi...de pattern is used differently here in that it is conveying possession...correct?
therefore the (书)being left out of your sentence 那是我朋友的 is because both parties understand that we are talking about a '书'. i对?
thanks, I'll take a look at the kindle lesson.

is 北方 = 北面? and would 北方 be a better choice to use?

August 14, 2012 at 5:02 AMI thought that 'when(time)' is at the beginning of the sentence. so this sentence
' 我们要在台北玩三天 ' can it be also spoken this way? 我们三天要在台北玩‘? or is the grammar incorrect? and if incorrect, is it intelligible?
I've noticed that if my grammar is a little off, my Chinese friends have a hard time understanding me.

August 11, 2012 at 6:40 PMthanks, I'm need to work on this a lot more to understand when to use it (naturally). I'm too new to quite understand it.
BTW in the newest QingWen, is it a shi.....de pattern? 对不对?
我看你们很合适,你们一个是水瓶座的,一个是白羊座的。
wǒ kàn nǐmen hěn héshì, nǐmen yī ge shì shuǐpíngzuò de, yī ge shì báiyángzuò de.
I think the two of you suit each other really well. One of you is an Aquarius and one's an Aries.
and could it be said 'ta yi ge shuipingzuo ren bieren ta yi ge baiyangzuo ren' and convey the same meaning NOT using shi...de (if in fact it is a shi....de pattern? ) 谢谢

August 10, 2012 at 4:07 PMthanks darkstar94! still trying to get the nuances of the language.
funny in that I asked a native speaker and she could not tell me the difference.
my stumbling block is I've heard 去 being used in the past tense (i.e., went, gone) ( 他去银行。(He went to the bank.) 我最近没去学校。
(I haven't gone to school lately.)) of course most sentences end with 了.
so could the second sentence also be interpreted as 'When did Xioming go to Beijing?'? in this context...
Me: Have you seen Xioming?
colleague : Oh, he is in Beijing.
Me: 小明什么时候去北京? (Xioming when go Beijing?=When did Xioming go to Beijing?=Xioming went to Beijing, when?) Is this wrong? Meaning can the second sentence be interpreted without using the shi .... de pattern? 是不是? thanks!

August 9, 2012 at 6:01 PMHey bodawei,
I can see a local doing this but don't think there are that many that have 40K rmbs lying around. and if they did, they are 'connected'(IMHO).
no I don't live in China nor know enough Chinese to understand what's going on but with my limited experiences I keep my guard up.
on one trip, my camera was pick pocketed. My Chinese girlfriend alerted me to the kid walking right next to me to be careful. I checked for my camera and it was already gone. I grabbed the kid by his wrist and started to search him. the camera wasn't on him. She told me he already handed it off and if I didn't let go of him and leave right away, his 'gang' would be on me shortly to 'beat the sh*t ' out of me and the police won't lift a finger.
Another time went to a restaurant in Sanya, they quoted the prices and after ordering a meal for 100 yuan, we get a bill for 1000 yuan. My friend refused to pay but they would not let us go and would call the police if we didn't.
Maybe I'm the only one being taken advantage of?
Just trying to 'avoid' problems for a few % RMBs. To me, that's the cost of doing traveling and being safe (insurance). :-)
and is it legal?

How about reading signs, menus, remake lessons using different dialogues or how an idea/sentence can be expressed using different word combination that we would most likely hear..
