June 13, 2009 at 3:15 AMI like that the qing wen s have become more linguisticly focused; almost like getting another lesson.

June 1, 2009 at 1:38 AMAwh! I was hoping they would kiss and make up. This incident impells Lao Wang to go into business with his less than respectable partner, and he gets rich smuggling plague infested chicken wings. Then his new found wealth rekindles old flames, but then the love of his life tragicly dies of a disease contracted while eating chicken wings over a candle lit dinner. ... Lao Wang's laments would probably contain lots of juicy vocabulary.
Besides, there already is a murder case lesson.

May 31, 2009 at 3:30 AMI will miss poems with Pete as much for the history lessons in the commentary, as for the linguistic content. (It will still be a few years before I can read Chinese poems without Pete.)

May 25, 2009 at 3:37 PM@shenyajin, in this series the mother-in-law expressed a strong preference for a grandson and used some expressions describing the continuation of the family line. I assume cpod didn't just make her perspective up from their imaginations; she must be representative of some, but not all, real people.

May 24, 2009 at 4:42 PMSiteng, " If poddies want to be able to use an expression in other circumstances (and not just understand its function in one particular dialogue), then we need more information than just its colloquial equivalent in that particular context" -- personally, I think the best way to do that is encounter the phrase in enough Chinese contexts to get a feel for how to use it. The usage of words and phrases with equivalent meanings in one context is often different in other contexts.
But, I have to admit I'm kind of a non-partisan in the debate about appropriate English translations, because I haven't bothered to read them for some time. Rather, I just try to understand in Chinese.
It did seem like the explanations in the recorded lessons for fairly clear and rich in nuance, though.

May 23, 2009 at 11:49 PMThe lesson commentary asked us to give suggestions for where the series should go. In that spirit, I think the baby has to be a girl. 我想知道婆婆会有怎么样的反应。 Will she try to drown the kid in the bath, or will she come to terms with the fact that there is no male hier to the family name?
