April 21, 2009 at 5:21 AM@a1pi2 Yeah that gender imbalance is quite alarming, I'd done some research on it back in my uni days. I believe the generations of males who won't find a female partner due to this phenomenon are sometimes referred to as 'dark horses of discontent' in Australian media. The linked news story is typically sensationalist, still it's a problem with potentially large implications.
On a lighter note, many families are happy to have daughters these days as it eases the financial pressure of having to buy a house and car as this seen as the role of the husband's family.

April 21, 2009 at 4:53 AM@a1pi2 @pearltowerpete I must say that Ardbeg was my fav for a while but Talisker is over taking it. Laphroaig is nice, and has more versatile flavours than the Ardbeg 10 yr old. Having been biased towards Islay Malts for a while I'm still interested and expanding my horizons towards Speysides and even, the milder Highland Malts. One day I'll get to Scotland to sample from the cask at as many distilleries as possible.

April 21, 2009 at 2:08 AM@jckeith @xio2009 You guys are spot on. I recall when I first started learning Chinese, I'd listen to ALL the tapes in my learning pack (back in the dark ages before ChinesePod), be humbled and inspired at the same time. Keep on Truckin! :-)
I heard that in China it is illegal to tell the parents the sex of the baby, however my (Aussie)mate and his (Sichuanese)wife were able to find out without even having to give a 红包. Could it be that if one of the parents isn't Chinese, then it's ok to to told the sex of the baby?

April 20, 2009 at 3:47 AM@missmountain:
Here are the instructions for embedding lesson sets. Note that the embed box is limited to contain no more than 10 lessons at the moment - we'll work on fixing this in the near future.

April 20, 2009 at 3:35 AMI used to buy 5rmb DVD's but since getting a nice big LCD flat screen tv I've noticed how poor (quality) they really are. If we could buy Non-pirate DVD's here I would - but they just aren't available.
As for silk etc, I'd recommend shopping with Chinese friends as they tend to have an eye for quality, and thus can be of great help in buying nice artifacts at a decent price.

April 22, 2009 at 12:56 PM@mikeinewshot I used to hate qi and ji (q,j) because they felt so similar, which similar pinyin initials do you have the most trouble with?
