Hi

When David refers to Google above, I think he is referring to searching not to automatic translation. I think he means that if you Google the two, you get more hits with one than the other, which suggests more real life usage.

I was under the impression however that Google was blocked at the moment in China - at least by one of my Chinese acquaintances...

I can't! I am not in China so don't have the latest notes, but have a few from 2005 or so and can't feel any braille - or am I not sensitive enough (or clever enough)?

I also never noticed any 盲人道 on the pavement (That is English for sidewalk by the way :-))， but I guess I wasn't looking for it. Is it recent?

Yes - agreed this is a really good lesson on many  fronts.

Jenny alluded to the difference between Asian and Western tastes.  I have always been struck, for example, by the different approach to news web pages, and information presentations.... In the West (is that too general?), at least in the US and UK in my experience, we go for clarity and a relatively small number of points, whereas Chinese web pages seem to be crammed to death to the extent that they frighten me off.

I recall that my company was trying once to persuage a Chinese client that what he wanted was a glossy brochure, when actually what he had in mind was a 'traditional' document with many pages of explanation.

Well indeed I haven't listened to it (yet?) but I know a Chinese lady resident in the UK who once mentioned that her daughter didn't use tampons ...

What a good lesson!

Good content, good discussion (almost) all in Chinese between native speakers, coupled with two male voices in the dialogue!

Incidentally, 勒紧裤腰带 English equivalent 'to tighten your belt' seems to me to have exactly the same feeling and connotation as the Chinese.  Is this a conincidence or did one of us pinch it from the other?
