Posted on: How Did You Learn Chinese?
April 11, 2011 at 4:02 PMwhoa.... are the cool kids still saying bomb diggity? (I wouldn't know, as my insight into cutting edge coolness will not be around until 2015 or so).

April 11, 2011 at 1:45 AMI would have been surprised if Dell's most recent 10-K had disclosed revenue by country. So for those interested in whether or not Dell's growth strategy in China is working, more is going to have to be teased out of secondary sources.

April 8, 2011 at 2:30 AMThere was a period where I regularly stayed at a Howard Johnson hotel in Beijing. Taxi drivers didn't usually know it, so I would just ask to be taken to Beijing railway station, and then just walk from the station to the hotel. It was later pointed out to me that there are 4 railway stations in Beijing. Also, if you're not careful, apparently you can get sent to a bus station if you just say 北京站。

April 5, 2011 at 1:13 PMSomehow, that sounds deliciously evil. Giving unsuspecting Chinese people cinnamon gum. I should do this the next time i'm hit up by some art students or people trying to sell me stuff at Wangfujing. Art student: "Hello sir, do you like art?" Me: "Here, try this. We eat this all the time in the States. You'll love it!"

April 5, 2011 at 7:25 AMI thought the blueberry potato chips were ok, although on its face it sounds completely unappetizing.
I liked the pineapple beer. This from someone accustomed to Sam Adams and Molson.
Nothing at McDonalds in China should be taken back to the US. There was some salad dressing filled pita hamburger thingy that I tried at the Shenzhen McDonalds at the airport, thinking that McDonalds was giving the people what they wanted. That pita thingy was NASTY. Worse yet. no locals were eating it either. They were all chewing down hamburgers and french fries.

April 5, 2011 at 5:18 AMI stand corrected. Hershey's makes Reese's peanut butter cups, not M&M/Mars.
Posted on: Getting Picked up by a Driver
April 15, 2011 at 2:30 AMIt's interesting, but a driver that speaks English has usually turned that ability into some kind of business. I remember once a guy in a very nice Volkswagen Passat taxi picked me up. The driver spoke to me in half decent English, and said not only does he drive the very nice Passat, but that he is also available for tours to the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, The Forbidden City, etc.
