January 6, 2010 at 5:34 PMWhat verb do you use for a medicine taken externally? (Iodine, a topical cream or ointment, for example, like the one in eupnea's picture.)
Does this work? It sounds strange to me.
这个药怎么擦?
zhègeyàozěnmecā?
How is this medicine supposed to be applied?
擦碘酒
cādiǎnjiǔ
apply iodine

Posted on: Rhetorical Question Marker 难道
January 2, 2010 at 8:48 PMI was watching Requiem for a Heavyweight this morning, and Army asks Maish: Anybody ever tell you what a prince of a guy you were?
With the help of Google, I've come up with 难道没有人告诉过你... 吗? (Nándào méi yǒu rén gào su guò nǐ ... ma?) for the first part. That's probably not right, but since we sometimes use this "Anybody ever told you ... " pattern to frame rhetorical questions in English, I thought I'd take a crack at it.

December 17, 2009 at 10:11 PMAs I climbed in bed and pulled the "covers" up over my head I thought to myself, I'll certainly never forget the words bèizi and tǎnzi... but then I did.
Actually, bodawei, this all reminds me of the time I learned the German word Karosserie. Our text book incorrectly translated the word as chassis. In automotive terminology, the chassis is the vehicle's frame + drive train. The word Karosserie means the vehicle's body, or coachwork. Being something of a gear/petrol head, this misuse of chassis drove me nuts. No one else in the class seemed to care less. Oh well, at least the book had a section on car stuff.

December 15, 2009 at 8:25 PM... come to think of it, it's the car's engine cooling system that provides the heat. And the air conditioning unit generates heat (reduces fuel mileage and horsepower). Okay, you've convinced me Orangina.

December 15, 2009 at 8:00 PMPuff--another word for a soft quilt. Just in case we needed one more.
@Orangina--I understand your point , but to me, the difference between air conditioning and heating is significant. In a car for example, the two mechanisms are completely different--even though they're both controlled by the same set of switches.
