Another note: A mule is the offspring of a male donkey and a female horse ... generally larger than a donkey.

Please excuse me while I go feed my pet bear.

This gǒu gǎibuliǎo chīshǐ metaphor doesn't exactly paint a very pretty picture in the mind's eye, but I don't think it's any worse than the one from Proverbs about the dog that returns to its vomit. I found a few Chinese translations Here (scroll to 26:11). On the other hand, I've heard that fortune favors fools ... so maybe the dogs know something we don't.

The CD quality .mp3 sounds fine to me. The background noise fades to a comfortable level as the conversation begins.

For what it's worth, I'd say you've got it right, "his swearing caused someone to give (him) a beating." The Chinese names the agent, 人, (who acted upon the subject by giving said subject the beating) while the English translation doesn't. "He was given a beating by someone for swearing," which obviously doesn't sound right in English. :-/

Time to pop over to YouTube and listen to that Huey Lewis song Hip To Be Square.

Man, I take one stinkin'  weekend off and this happens! Aw nuts! Now I'm depressed ... Seriously Jason, you've got a lot to be proud of. Being a good translator is tough, and you're a great one. All the best!

Thanks RJ, They must have been playing the American/Jewish version on Seinfeld, then. I think I remember some of the terms from the web site you linked to being used (i.e. Craks, Bams).

A couple thoughts given your Mahjong practice partners predicament. I see that there are some video game versions of Mahjong (besides the solitaire versions romanoaj31 and Jason discussed below). Unfortunately, they seem to be in Japanese, but maybe there's an English version.

My other idea ... Have you considered getting a Lazy Susan? Save having to get up and change seats all the time. ;-)

On the subject of westerners playing the game, there's a scene in one Seinfeld episode were George's mother is playing Mahjong with her friends; also, when some friends of mine bought a house, they found a Mahjong set in the attic. We couldn't figure out what to do with it though. :-/
