December 6, 2009 at 10:47 AMHehe, to dock one's salary means to deduct an amount from one's salary, usually as a punishment. To dock can just mean to cut short - you can dock a dog's tail, for example.

December 5, 2009 at 10:52 PMThe PDF key vocab says 工资 means "to dock wages/salary" whereas my dictionary says it just means salary. Is this an error?

December 2, 2009 at 7:37 PMI presume this 上火 business is what I've heard referred to as "heatiness".
I associate it with dehydration/lack of sleep. If you sit out in the sun all day, you're get that tired, dehydrated, crappy feeling, and the fastest way to make you feel worse is to go home and eat lots of deep-fried spicy food. Much better to go and eat lots of watermelon and drink green tea!
I totally get the whole heaty thing. It feels kind of like a hangover induced by far too much sun. And you end up with mouth ulcers.

November 3, 2009 at 10:50 PMThree, a hard sleeper carriage is just a second-class sleeper carriage. The beds aren't actually that hard, but it's not as luxurious as a soft sleeper (first-class sleeper carriage).

October 31, 2009 at 11:01 PMRich, I considered giving last year's trick-or-treaters durian-flavoured sweets, to put them off trick-or-treating for life. But I decided it would be slightly mean, and plus a waste of good sweets!

October 29, 2009 at 7:55 PMxiaophil, I think it rather depends on how one defines "drawl" - as I am not a technical accenty person (a linguistics expert?), what I probably mean is almost all American accents are rhotic (is this what I mean?)
My argument is more that Scottish and Welsh accents are heavily influenced by the original languages of the region.
Apparently, the Scots have only been speaking English universally since the Union time (around 300 years ago), which is something I never realised. But then I didn't realise the Union was so young until a few years ago.
Anyway, accent discussions can go on forever and day, so I think I should stop!

December 6, 2009 at 5:42 PMGood lord, children know the deal from about ages 6+, whatever you may wish to believe about childhood innocence. When I was 8 years old, no one could say the words "do it" in any context without eliciting ridiculous amounts of giggling.
