’頂好酒’：我的意思是‘質量非常好的酒。’因爲句子有‘山頂’這個詞，所以我想再用‘頂’字來描寫酒的質量。怎麽樣才好？

很多年以前在香港的時候我一天爬到Victoria Peak的山頂。在山腳看見一位從山上跑下來的人。在山腰再遇到他到山頂跑上。最後到達山頂的時候我吃了驚：再一次見他從山頂跑下去。一直到現在才知道，他一定是喝十八碗頂好酒的。

bababardwan, Sarah Allen has written an interesting book called The Shape of the Turtle, if you're interested. In it she describes how the carapace of the turtle represents the circle of the heavens and the plastron (underbelly) represents the square of the earth. The plastron also divides into 9 squares (3x3) representing the 9 regions of the earth (the spaces where the legs fit represent the four corners).

I don't remember if this applies to both turtles and tortoises. Be odd if it didn't.

跟我在美國的經驗很不一樣。從送貨公司的觀點半天留在家是收貨人的責任。非常不方便。真討厭。

Very different from my experience with delivery in the States. The big delivery companies usually just give you two big windows: morning or afternoon, and YOU are expected to wait there the whole time. If you're not there when they finally arrive, if they finally arrive, they consider you to be at fault. (Sorry, this wasn't a translation; just expressed a similar complaint in English.)

I was told that in Hong Kong there is a right direction for the tea to be served (clockwise or anticlockwise), until the last round when the direction is reversed. Does anyone know which way is which? And is this true for other parts of China too?

By the way, black tea in India is most often brewed with milk and sugar (sometimes spices--in which case it's called 'spice tea' or 'masala tea'), and not with water. I believe Thai tea is similar?

But I wholeheartedly agree: either 牛奶 or 糖 in 青茶should be made a criminal offense. 应该处罚的犯罪！

Bodawei, 谢谢你给我那些关于澳大利亚英语的消息. 很有意思。I've never heard of 'talk-fests' before, but love the term, and have never seen 'caucus' used that way. Perhaps I should have modified the Shaw quote to three cultures divided by a common language!

I know this is a year late, but on the pronunciation of "Thames": the English pronunciation is neither 'tames' nor 'tams' but 'temz' (rhymes with "gems"). At least, that's how us Londoners pronounce it.

And it's definitely possible to get good 炒鱼和薯条 in 伦敦 again. I've had some good old fashioned fish'n'chips in Chiswick--for loads o' money, it's true. I had to take out a second mortgage to afford it. But it was 好吃极了.

Mikeinewshot, I'm wondering if your sense of discontentment with this lesson isn't because some of the vocabulary is dry and technical ("通知," "部门," etc). Perhaps, technical vocab doesn't lend itself so easily to variations of usage, and technical equivalents just have to be learnt through ...(ugh!)...good old fashioned rote memorization? I get the same feeling of grumpiness when I have to memorize technical terms!

Having said that, thanks to alexyze for the nciku link! That looks like a great resource.

Incidentally, I was surprised to discover that ordinary meetings are regularly referred to as "conferences" when I moved to the States. The two words have quite different usage in British English. Two cultures divided by a common language indeed!
