February 1, 2013 at 1:33 AMWell, it is different if you are a foreigner. If a foreigner offers the seat, it is great loss of face to the Chinese on the bus that a local did not make the offer. I have lived in China for three years and can count on one hand the times I've seen an elderly Chinese refuse a seat offered by another Chinese.

January 31, 2013 at 10:04 PMWhile I agree with Dilu that confrontation about this situation is not very frequent, I have witnessed it a few times, and Chen Kaige even made a movie last year based on a similar incident ("Caught in the Web"). What happens with distressing frequency is young people take the seats, old people or pregnant women get on and have to stand, and nobody says anything.

January 3, 2013 at 4:28 AMNo owner is going to refuse you service because you did not tip the waiter. The owner wants your business, and it is of no concern to him or her whether you tip the waiter. Also, it's highly unlikely the manager would question you about your lack of a tip, although the waiter might stop and ask you that question.

July 1, 2012 at 8:41 PMAre you f'n kidding about faking pregnancy as a way to trick someone into getting married? Might work on a Chinese guy but the Western guys I know do not exactlly think "let's get married" when they hear about a pregnancy. Much more likely to embark on frantic search for passport and start checking out flight prices on orbitz

November 18, 2011 at 3:15 PM政治目的? Yeah, having an adopted Chinese daughter will make Huntsman real popular among Republican primary voters. It will help him almost as much as having worked for Obama.

March 6, 2014 at 12:36 AMI hate to pile on complaints, but I really miss being told the tones at certain points in the discussion. This seems to be happening with less and less frequency and not at all in some of the dialogue discussions. I can only speak for myself, but I find the providing of tones very useful, especially at the intermediate level. I am pretty good at catching first tones and so so on third, but having someone point out there is a second tone and then listening to it over and over again really helps me with tones. This used to be done much more frequently and now hardly happens at all. Yes, I could always check the PDF, but I invariably listen to the dialogues while walking or exercising and so do not always get around to it. So i would appreciate if more of an effort would be made to point out tones at certain key places.
