January 26, 2010 at 2:10 AMWow, Gesang, it's beautiful. I'm not at all surprised that you're planning (another) return!

January 25, 2010 at 2:22 AMGesang, talking about the experiences of left-handed people, how did your Tibeten wall painting restoration project go? You've been back home for a little while now, I imagine? Do you have pictures?

January 25, 2010 at 1:57 AMZhenlijiang - I've never considered whether or not whiteboard writing is more awkward for "leftys" (I just assumed it was awkward for everyone!). The way I'd tackle it is to keep my hand below the text rather than coming from the left; smudge-free results but it's definitely awkward, yes.
At school I did well in art class (gesang, I guess you're right!), but I wonder if I would have discovered the joy of painting had I been forced to use my right hand as a child?
It's food for thought, though: how many born artists are there in China, for example, who never discovered their creative talents because they were forced to use their right hands?

January 24, 2010 at 9:14 AMI'm looking forward to hearing the "lefty" lesson this coming week!
As far as I know, left-handedness is "tolerated" in schools in China far more readily than it once was, but it is still fairly unusual to see in adults.
I taught at a school in Anhui province for a while a few years ago. The children, both young kids and adolescents, would gasp and call out when I'd start writing on the whiteboard with my left hand. It was just amusing to them - another laowai eccentricity, perhaps.
I guess we'll find out more about this issue in the lesson...

January 10, 2010 at 4:21 AMAhh, bababardwan, I think you're looking it the wrong way around: just think how great it will be, at the end of the year when you've achieved your goal, to be showered with compliments and publically celebrated?!!! Can't really do that if you don't let us know what you're aiming for... ;-)

January 2, 2010 at 2:05 PMI've had a go at some examples, as John instructed! I'm probably wrong in lots of places... would some kind soul correct me?
难道你以为我们不接受你的意见了吗?
nándào nǐ yǐwéi wǒmen bù jiēshòu nǐ de yìjiàn le ma?
What, did you really think we wouldn't take your advice?
你吃得怎么快!难道你从来没吃过饭吗?
nǐ chī de zěnme kuài! nándào nǐ cóng lái měi chī guò fàn ma?
You eat so quickly! Have you never eaten food before?
难道我们不是最好朋友? 告诉我吧!!
nándào wǒmen bù shì zuì hǎo péngyou? gàosù wǒ ba!!
Are we not best friends? Tell me!!
难道你从2008一直住在小石子下面吗?
nándào nǐ cóng 2008 yīzhǐ zhù zài xiǎo shízǐ xiàmiàn ma?
Have you been living under a rock since 2008?!
[I've applied English expressions to Chinese, so I'm guessing this alone might be problematic, but if the grammar's okay I'm happy...!]

January 26, 2010 at 7:14 AMhunchiepunker, I lived in a city called Wuhu, the home of Chery cars and very hospitable people. Was a great experience. Are you based in Anhui?
