August 7, 2009 at 1:02 AM我又试试。。。
这个话题很有意思而且很切题。(Is 切题 the best way to say 'relevant'?)
觉得很难说中国会成为第一强国,一个因素很关键的,这个因素叫人口。现在大人口对中国的权利有好处,不过将来大人口有可能妨碍中国的权利(I wanted to say rise to power, but I wasn't sure how),因为资源为了维持增加的水不足。
"This topic is interesting and relevant.
I think it is hard to say if China will become the number one super power. It all depends on one factor. This factor is population. (okay, this isn't really the only factor.) China's power now benifits from a large population, but in the future the large population may limit it becuase resources will not be able to support rising standards."

Can you tell me if you can understand my meaning? I don't need a word-for-word analysis. 多谢你们!

我认为说不准中国会不会第一强国,这就要看一个因素的情况了这个因素就是人口(okay, this isn't really the only factor)。现在中国人口的量对中国的权利有好处,但是将来中国的发展到底有可能受人口限制,因为资源不能维持增加的水平。
Ahhh, I'm too rushed for time. I know this is messed up. I wanted to say:
"This topic is interesting and relevant.

If anyone can give me a hand fixing my statement, I would be mighty thankful.

Ah, so there is the reason. I always thought 45 was a funny number. A little too short for one class. But then again, they usually come in twos.

August 5, 2009 at 3:53 AMI'm going to take the diplomatic route and mention that the online Webster dictionary does list suicide as both a noun and a verb. Since English doesn't have a central authority like French, this argument is probably open to endless debate. I still say that using suicide as a verb is so uncommon and unnatural sounding that it would be best to just consider it wrong.
我想用外交说法,Webster的网上字典表示suicide一边作名词一边作动词,由于英文没有什么中心机构,于是这个争论是无止境的。我还是认为用suicide的动词说法很不常见而听起来不自然,因此最好是不要算正确。

Thanks so much! I'm wondering if I could have used 宁愿 to make this sentence? That was what I was really trying to do. I trying to express 'would rather' without using 比 and 不如.
我很麻烦。

August 5, 2009 at 3:01 AMThanks guys
I know this is getting detailed, but I am still unclear about something I wanted to say in the past, so I hope someone can clarify it. I taught at a university before, and the classes I taught were an hour and fourt-five minutes. However, the school considered this to be two 45 minute periods. How would I say 'two 45 minute periods'?

August 5, 2009 at 1:17 AMGot a question
I forgot the measure words for classes. If I remember right, these three situations have different measure words, and sometimes more than one measure word can be used:
- a class (节 jie2, right?)
- a class period, i.e. some classes take up two, one hour periods
- a course, e.g. "I signed up for a math course." (Maybe this is 名 ming2?)
Can somebody help out? Thanks.
Looks as if Xiao Bao has found some deep water.

August 7, 2009 at 2:28 AMSome more food for thought.
我认为世界正在回到更自然国际秩序,三千年以来很多强大国家同时并存,这些国家之内,一个国家肯定比别的强,不过由于各强国有权利基地,于是这点不太重要。现在的情况一样,超级大国当然有利,可是也有限。现在大部分的人觉得美国最强大,不过我们不能命令中国,我们甚至不能控制阿富汗。我认为最好是查看国家的促销生计的能力。
"I think the world is reverting to a more natural order. For much of the past three thousand years there have been mighty powers coexisting at the same time. One had to be more powerful than the others, but it didn't really matter because they had their power base. The same is true now. Super powers have many advantages, but they also have limits. America is considered the strongest now, but we can't tell China what to do. We can't even control Afganistan. I think what is better to examine is how well a country promotes a decent livelihood for its people."
If someone can tell me about any big mistakes, that would be welcome. No pressure, though.

Thanks again!
