It might be a Brit thing. In America, calling someone an Oriental is a faux pas, but I have met Brits that have never heard of that.
这可能是英国人习惯。在美国,这样的说法肯忌讳,不过我认识过些没听说这件事的英国人。

August 4, 2009 at 4:11 PMHi xuchen
I think that 非常了不起 is very flattering (thanks on behalf of America), but I'm fairly sure it is like saying 'Americans have a super awesome phenomenon'. However, I'm thinking that the second half of the sentence could be just about right.
I must confess I was just trying to use the word 宁愿 in a sentence, but it seems I failed.
I guess shenyajin might come to the rescue in about 10 hours.

I tried to say, "As for America, our society has a strange characteristic. Many Americans would rather have perfect white teeth than get thin."

怎么说“I suffer from 过敏” ?
我不满你们说,我偶尔是个疑病患者,不过我知道一直担心这样的事真没用。
关于美国人,我们的社会有一个奇怪的特点,很多美国人宁愿有完美白色的雅子也不变瘦。(Is this sentence somewhat right?)
Good lesson! 加油!

August 3, 2009 at 3:45 PMHello quasifrog
I could be wrong, but I think that we are only asked to use pinyin in the newbie and elementary levels. At this level, I think that abilities should be at a point where we don't have to type both pinyin and Chinese. It is twice the typing after all. There are pop up dictionaries out there if you are frustrated.

You are absolutely right. However, I think they are just like English in that in casual situations it doesn't matter much, e.g. if you are in the store, you could say 我要买那个 (I want to buy that one) or 我想买那个 (I would like to buy that one) and it pretty much is the same thing. Tone of voice is probably most important.
Or so this 老外 (lao3wai4) thinks.

When I was young, I remember quite clearly thinking it was strange that Oriental was a derogatory word. My guess is it has something to do with the derogatory way non-Asian Americans used the word in the past, and probably the English were less inclined to do it this way. To me, Oriental is a more colorful word, so it is a bit of a shame.
我小时,我记得很清楚,那时我认为很奇怪Oriental是个不好词。我猜是与这个oriental词被以前的不亚洲美国人常用于贬义有关的,与此相反,英国人没有这样的偏见说法。拿我来说,我认为oriental更丰富多采,因此有点可惜。
