I think finding different methods of learning Chinese is a great idea, however I'd like to just put a little warning out there.
Often the menu and the bill will be the same thing, usually at larger restaurants and hotpot places. Do your best NOT to steal those kinds of menus. The waiters will often be fined up to 500yuan for losing a bill/menu. I know because I tried and the person came yelling at "No no! I need that! Oh god not again"..
However, the smaller places.. steal away!!! hahah!

Thanks a lot, I've been told that 没拿手 is wrong by a couple of other Chinese friends.

April 11, 2009 at 1:13 PMI really HATE writing the word 拿，I find it difficult to write neatly and always just scribble it down as quick as I can.
I learned a bit of Chinese sign langauge a while ago (手语）and realized just how important characters were to learning the langauge. Canada (加拿大）was explained to me as "Add, take, big". I didn't understand at first and the man took a little tea pot and put it on top of his fist. Oh, 拿。。。
I read some where that 拿 often means unity like Pete said because it's a pot and a lid coming together perfectly to do it's job. But who knows...

Thanks for those examples guys, can you think of any other ways to use this pharse. could I say:
他刚来中国，在饭店里他没拿手点菜。
He just came to China, he's not comfortable ordering food in restaurants.

Squatters are part of the "China experience" (especially in a moving / shaking train) and you get quickly used to it!
Oh yeah! It's the worst, especially when it comes to a stop and the window is open.. oh man. Last time I go to Inner Mongolia.

我现在住在中国当外教，教小孩儿英语。一些学生对英语没有兴趣，但他们还是说英语说得不错。他们长大以后会发现他们的英语水平已经很高，而且会感觉学语言好容易！拿我来说，加拿大的学生都必须从很小学到高中学法语。上高中以后你可以自己选。当时我不喜欢学习语言，所以我没继续学。到现在我看一张法语报纸能看懂一小部分，要是我的父母非要我学下去法语可能现在我会说的很流利。

For the record, there are lots of "high maintanence" women all over the world. As there are lots of lazy men aswell. No one is pointing a finger at Chinese women.

I've tried zuo1 with my g/f before. She knows the meaning but said there is a word in the local dialect that better matches what we are trying to convey.
Anyone heard of something like zao4 ye1 in Mandarin.. The tones in 徐州话 are all different from Mandarin but the pronunciation comes out more then less the same.

但是我有个问题，在电视节目上律师经常打断诉讼说“objection!"。可能在中国法律系统里不允许这种行为。
我至今为止从来没有去过法院，而且没有这个打算。
请问我们这儿的同学有没有被控告去法院的经历？
