I feel your pain about the coins and paper issue in Beijing, I have stopped in Beijing before just for a few hours. Wanted to buy some snacks and was turned down due to "coinage".. *sigh*..
Tracy,
It was interesting hearing your story about driving in China. Do you speak Chinese? Are you Chinese? It sounds like you handled all of those situations in a native Chinese fashion. Also, I know if a foreigner is in a traffic accident they can expect to get completly creamed by fines and charges, even from the police. It sounds like you escaped unharmed? What is your secret?

Good advice on buying a TV, but I'm not so sure I want to add to the exsisting pollution of it just yet!
And yes, those are the right characters!

November 5, 2008 at 7:23 AM像素 - Pixel
我常常看到一些电视广告突出液晶电视的方面,特别是一台有多少像素。
我知道这句话写的不对,有什么更好的吗?

Sure it's easy to complain about over protective guards until you come home to a missing bicycle..
I lived in a large building complex of about 30 - 40 buildings and a few thousand people. Everday there was probably about a dozen or so reports of bike/scooter/car theft and vandalism reported. When I questioned the guards they had told me that the problem had gotten out of hand and the new policy was "protect your property".
If your gaurds are good be sure to thank them with smokes and oranges!!

November 2, 2008 at 5:48 AMI completely agree,
Listening is only something that'll get better if you continue to listen.
I often listen to Chinese radio. With radio it's difficult to get context but it really makes you listen for the words you already know, and helps you learn to pick out words you don't know. The beauty of Chinese is that there is only so many sounds, so if you hear something and don't understand try looking up the word and keep listening, it's pretty easy and effective!
I'd say out of reading, speaking, and listening, listening is by far my best skill.
