I'm not sure what stuns me more..

The fact that Jenny is going to be a smurf or that John knows how to say smurf in Chinese...

Crazy!

Jenny,

I completly agree。 I went to visit a friend once in 金坛, a small town in 江苏 that most people have never heard of. After dinner his idea of a good time was to go to an internet bar to see how people we could get into a game.. needless to say I spent that evening alone on the town. *Sigh*

This sounds familar to a town near my old home town in Canada. It was a small little one horse town, but was also the country's Meth captial.. Idol hands do the devils work...

-许尘,

p.s "one horse town" 中文怎么说?

Great lesson,

After the lesson explaination I feel I can really understand the dialogue, a long way off from understanding it in conversation but it's a start! Thanks!

Last year I lived in 无锡 with a few other foreigners in a small apartment. Our heating was poor and it was difficult to stay warm during the winter, especially when that snow storm hit and stayed for a few months. We used to go to Web bars to hang out and kill a few hours while keeping warm, sometimes we would check mail and play games for 3 or 4 hours and then head out to find other cheap methods of warmth, such as a massage.. Often we would go back at night to kill some more time and the people we saw in the afternoon would be playing the same game with the same people. . I couldn't believe it, 10-12 hours in the same place!!

A serious problem indeed!!

Is the guy in the back yelling "尝尝栗子”。 Is this another example of Chinesepod cannibalizing its lessons?.. Huh huh? Come clean now!! First reusing a picture and now complete audio sections! All this talk about honesty and we get this!!

:-) Just kidding. It made me happy I could understand the backround noise WHILE listening to the lesson!

The athletes song is something I heard EVERYDAY while I was teaching middle school. The students would listen to it while doing morning exercises. Brings back memories!

I had my first harry crab last night at a company dinner. The guests of honor were our co-workers from Shanghai, no wonder they ordered so many crabs!!

Although to be prefectly honest, I am extremely happy I didn't know the difference between the male and female crabs. It was awkward enough cracking these things open as it was..

Changye,

I've tried out some of your suggestions (mainly 脾气很坏) around the office and have gotten some "positive" responses in the sense that they think I'm grumpy. Success!

Jenny,

I haven't tried 不爽 yet but I'll give it a try the next time。 I also kind of thought 爽  was more like awesome or  super.. I don't really use it that often, unless I'm looking for another "wicked" word..

谢谢您们两个人!!

Ah,

Thanks Pete! I agree that those translations don't fully capture my "before coffee" face that my friends are becoming so familiar with in the morning..

也许我可以这样说 “喝咖啡之前的脸”。。 but I doubt it's a good translation for all situations.

Thanks,

Great lesson,

I've really enjoyed this series, and not just because it's right at the level for me but also for the added insights into formal Chinese. There is a lot I can't read or understand because it gets lost in formal language.

大家应该多主动学习中文吧!! 呵呵!

"Grumpy" 中文怎么说?我的朋友们知道这个英文单词,但不知道怎么翻译。。

多谢多谢!!

The first time I saw a 打折 sign it was 打五折 and I struggled and struggled to to remember if it was 50% off or pay 50% of the fill price..

*sigh*..

挺好玩儿。。

可是我不太清楚 “结果” 怎么用?。。

Jenny, 在故事里,你说小男孩儿第三次放羊,“结果狼来了”

Is this more of a "in the end the wolf came", "Evenutally a wolf came".. The translation says "result", does the wolf come as a result of the boys joke. Or can the the outcome be unrelated to the boy's joke?..

谢谢,
