Jenny explains at the beginning (3:10+) that 本帮菜 is a more of a fixed saying(固定的说法)and came from Shanghainese(I think that is what she said). John also inquires if it is okay to say “本地菜” to refer to a different local style of cooking, the anwser is no. Jenny also notes that if you say 本帮菜 in a different city the people will know that you are refering to shanghai style food.

I think I heard that correctly, can anyone correct me if I am off a bit please!

**Quick note, I just asked a few Chinese friends and they don't seem to agree that it is JUST Shanghai style. They say that each city can have its own 本帮菜** 老师,请解释一下!!

Wow,

I just checked out www.dianping.com was pleasantly surprised by how easy it is to use. Don't me wrong guys, my Chinese isn't very good but I  still found it really easy to find my city (徐州 Xuzhou) and check out some places I already know. Not to mention, read some reviews on the places I frequently go to. 这里有从徐州来的人吗?

What was also surprising was that places that I had had problems with also had many other people who didn't like that particular place. Awesome!

I highly recommend trying to read some the reviews, most of them aren't too challenging to guess at the meanings.

Great lesson!

Great show,

I was really interested in how you were effected by your vow of silence Pete. I am wondering if you think you could have done the week if you weren't in the monestary. Did the environment really help you get through the time? I imagine doing it in a city would be painful..

I asked a few of my business students about the role of drinking [白酒] at dinner and when I specifically asked about how important  it was they all responded "super important" and perhaps you wont be trusted you if you don't drink with them..

Great DA,

Great lesson!

Can 差一点儿 be used in this this way.

我每天中午差一点儿总是去吃米线

"I almost always go eat mi xian for lunch"

我可以这样说吗?

Light487:

I think the 儿话(er hua) or northern accent isn't much more common then any other accent, however I think in this case 差点儿 is more of a set phrase, almost like 一会儿(yi hui er). The 儿 might not be necessary in written messages but is almost always used in the spoken language. Makes every thing sounds a little more balanced and together. Anyone else hear this?..

谢谢,
