After solving the mystery of the circus burglary, Detective Li and his team drove north to Yongkang Road. Someone had reported that they had discovered a trail of bloody footprints and the smell of gas wafting from the basement of building 85 in the Yongkang housing compound.

The intermittent bloody footsteps traced a path from the building’s cellar up to room 203. Judging by the direction of the foot prints, it was clear that someone had walked from room 203 down the stairs to the basement. Xiao You and the others had an uneasy feeling, not knowing what kind of bloody scene they would discover behind the door.

The compound guards explained that the basement was small. There was only a single door, and when it was closed the room was completely sealed shut. When the party arrived at the basement’s entrance, they discovered that a bloody key was still lodged in the door.
