I think it's accurate to say that 要不然 is used more colloquially, in a dialogue in particular. The more formal equivalent would be 否则。

May 23, 2019 at 4:35 AMHi Susanna, most lessons start with rules and then examples. In this series, we have decided to do a new structure, with many examples first and then come the rule. In this structure, students are encouraged to know the tones by listening and using them, while NOT to think of tone change as something they have to memorize and then apply by the rule. Language learning is more natural than that in the beginner's level. Rule (grammar) starts to be meaningful and helpful when you collect enough examples to go by.

For example, 牛仔裤适用于任何场合吗？ In this question, even though it can be translated as "Are jeans suitable in all occasions?" The more proper translation is "Are jeans suitably used in all occasions?" Furthermore the word 於 also makes the words preceding it a verb in this sentence.
